What are the Types of ATVs?

There are a lot of variations or versions of the ATV, here are a few of the most popular ones that can be found in North America.

Four Wheeler

The Four Wheeler or a Quad is the most common type of ATV in the market. The four wheeler evolved from the 6 wheel amphibious ATV and the 3 Wheeler. During the middle of the 80′s manufacturers started replacing the 3 wheeler with Quads due to safety reasons. Today the four wheeler is the dominant type of ATV in the market and is currently in use for all types of purposes from recreation, racing sports, industrial and even military.Three Wheeler

The three wheeler is on the earliest for of ATV in the market. They started coming out in the American markets during the early 80′s. But early models of the three wheelers or trikes came even in the late 60′s as popular projects for motorbike enthusiast. Honda came out with the model US90 which was still a hybrid model but soon became its framework for more off road models which gave them a reputation for creating the best three wheelers. A banned on three wheelers was imposed on the late 80′s and gave way to the rise of Quads.

Six Wheelers or AATV

The six wheelers or an AATV is the original form of ATV which came out in the market during the early 60′s. Manufacturers like Jiger, Amphicat and Terra Tiger introduced America to the world of the ATV. The concept of a vehicle that can go any where was very popular in the market and was further made popular by the moon buggy from Apollo Missions. Popular Mechanics often would have several ads of amphibious ATV showing their capabilities. Most early 6 wheelers were hard on maintenance and were very expensive.
